This
formal lengha was created from a vintage maroon-and-xari sari found during a fortuitous
search in a bazaar in Jaipur. The sari had a huge tear in the middle in just the
right place to divide the material into a blouse and skirt. We brought the material
back to New Delhi and started designing immediately. The
A-line skirt is comprised of panels and embellished with gold embroidery and crystals.
We found two vintage xari borders of contrasting pink and blue material and heavily
embroidered them with golden thread and crystals to provide definition to the
bottom of the lengha. For the front of the blouse,
we turned the material inside out so that more xari and less maroon was visible,
then highlighted the floral motif with golden embroidery. The middle of the back
is cut out and ties behind the neck. The lower part of the back has the same blue
border that is on the skirt. To tie the look together,
we made a dupatta from maroon chiffon, embroidered with small golden buties that
match the work on the skirt border. One side of the dupatta also has a length
of the pink border on the skirt. The four edges of the dupatta as well as the
skirt have a golden lettuce-edged embroidered border. This
lengha is perfect for any formal occasions. A plain red sari with gold embroidery
that is similar to the dupatta can be made for the blouse to create a second ensemble.
