The
word "Mughal" instantly conjures up images of miniature paintings in
which the subjects are dressed in lavish silks and dripping with pearls. Xari
Couture has spent much time studying traditional jewelry, from looking at real
pieces in the best museum collections in America, to working with world-famous
jewelers to learn the secrets of their techniques. The
collection above is a set of crocodile-head bangles decorated with elaborate meenakari,
or enamel work. The outer edges of the bangles are black with golden vines and
polki diamond flowers. The inside of the bangle is decorated with a traditional
red-and-green floral motif on a white background. The crocodile heads are decorated
with red enamel, delicately painted teeth, and ruby tongues. These bangles are
hinged on one side and open via an enameled screw to be securely fastened onto
the wearer's wrist. The earrings were based on
a traditional jhumpki-style, which look like miniature chandeliers suspended from
enameled paisleys. They are decorated with polki diamonds and pearls. Meenakari
